IBELIEVEIN SWORDFISH

Hi. We’re Swordfish, a motion design studio based in San Francisco. Our team of directors, designers, animators, and technologists work with direct clients and ad agencies to design memorable pictures in motion. We are fearless storytellers, focused motion design innovators, and forward-thinking marketing professionals. When you need to move something, we’re here to help.

AUDI BELIEVES

Audi Connect is a revolutionary new connected car experience bringing realtime data directly to the driver. Our friends at Venables Bell & Partners came to Swordfish to help with the product launch for Audi USA. We created an animation from concept through completion which details the product in an abstract representation, relying on beautiful data visualizations to explain the benefits without ever seeing a physical car or user interface.

MAXON BELIEVES

When Maxon decided to stun the content creation world with the introduction of a revolutionary new integration between Cinema 4D and Adobe After Effects, they turned to Swordfish to design content to show off the new functionality. Our only direction was to use footage from the Danny Way documentary “Waiting For Lightning”, provided by Bandito Brothers. Can you say “dream project”. Besides the finished spot, hours of tutorials detailing the shot breakdowns were delivered to both Maxon and Adobe for use as advanced training material.

MATT SILVERMAN

As the Executive Creative Director of Swordfish, Silverman leads a diverse team of visual communicators. From designing worldwide product launches to directing live-action effects-intensive shoots, the world’s most respected brands including Apple, Sony, and Microsoft have put their trust in Matt Silverman's hands. Silverman’s work has been seen around the world, including animations playing on every Macintosh computer, Super Bowl spots for Yahoo! and First Union Bank, Directors Guild award-winning spots for Musco Olives, film titles for the Oscar nominated film La Corona, and UX design found on gadgets in millions of people's pockets. read more

With a background in design, visual effects, and animation, Silverman got his start in the industry at one of the world’s first integrated agencies, CKS Group, working on various accounts including Apple, Compaq, and Timberland. As a Partner, Visual Effects Supervisor, and Flame artist at San Francisco's leading editorial boutique, Phoenix Editorial, Silverman built up a design and effects department which eventually split off into Bonfire Labs. Over the course of his 12 year run at Phoenix/Bonfire, he worked with San Francisco’s top creative advertising agencies including Venables Bell, Goodby, and Black Rocket/Heat, as well as directly for clients including Adobe Systems, Apple Inc., Facebook, Jaguar Landrover, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, Sony, T-Mobile, and Yahoo!. Now he brings his experience and creative energy to Swordfish, where he continues to push motion design in all sorts of new directions.

As a founding partner and CEO of Theory LLC, Silverman brought to market numerous software tools designed to solve his production problems. Products include Microcosm, the world's only 64bit lossless QuickTime codec, ColorTheory, a stand-alone application and set of plug-ins for finding harmonious color schemes, and the Knoll Light Factory plug-ins for Autodesk Flame and Smoke. Theory's QuickTime expertise lead to the development of the Flash FLV QuickTime video export component, licensed to Macromedia (Adobe) for inclusion in Flash 2004, helping birth the internet video revolution. Prior to Theory, Silverman lead the development of various applications and plug-ins as a Product Manager at Puffin Designs, working under Oscar winning ILM visual effects supervisors Scott Squires and John Knoll (co-creator of Photoshop). Matt continues to be involved in the software industry as an investor in Buuteeq (a cloud platform for hotels) and DigiEffects.

Silverman has been a faculty member at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Hollywood, as well as the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has lectured on topics including Bauhaus color theory, motion graphics, and visual effects around the world, and has been a featured artist in Res Magazine, Post Magazine, Adobe.com, and Apple.com.
